Here is Angie's recollection of her Meet and Greet with David at the Turning Stone casino in March 2002. Are we just a bit jealous ?

My friend Sheila and I travelled to New York on 17th March, we were staying there for 4 days prior to getting to the Turning Stone Casino. We thought it was going to be easy but alas no it was a 5-hour train journey and 45-minute taxi journey to get there. Little did we know that on arrival at Utica Station, that a blizzard would start and the taxi would be thrown all over the freeway. We were at our wits end with worry. Would we get there and worse still would DC make it.

We arrived at the Casino to be told that it was a dry Casino and no alcohol allowed – I needed a drink but soda water was the dish of the day. We checked in and our accents gave us away, we were told that DC’s tour manager had left us a message on our room number and that we were on for Meet and Greet after the show. I spoke to him immediately and was told I could take one thing for signing and don’t forget the camera and to meet after the show on Saturday night. This was Friday morning, how was I going to get through to Saturday night in that place with nothing to do in a foot of snow was beyond me.

Anyway, Saturday morning arrived, we played the machines a bit, had lunch which took us till 2pm and then decided on a walk outside, it was freezing but time was going slowly. We walked around the building in the freezing cold but it was something to do. We arrived back at about 3pm and I could hear “Ain’t No Sunshine” blaring out. I said to Sheila “that’s David” we ran to the showroom and behold he was there. I was staring through the crack in the door at my idol dressed in lovely jeans and white top and thought “God he is so cute”. We stayed there for a couple of songs and then ran up to get changed for the pre-dinner. We met two lovely American girls who had driven in the snow for a few hours just to see him they thought that we were totally bonkers to have come from London. Anyway, 8pm arrived and DC arrived on stage. Drop Dead Gorgeous as ever.

He sang a lot of the songs from the UK concerts, as the UK CD was about to be released over there. He sang a few additional Partridge Family songs, including Echo Valley 26809, which was hysterical because he had upgraded it to fit the new mobile phone era. He also sang Mervyn’s Song. He had a bit of trouble with his microphone and couldn’t hear his guitar so he got a bit annoyed but he coped really well and sang his heart out. God knows how many women he kissed all I know was I wasn’t included. It was very strange watching David with a glass of Coke on a table and a side-ways view but nevertheless I still enjoyed his show. One woman, who was celebrating her 40th birthday said to him that the last time she saw him he looked like an ant because she was so far away, he called her over and gave her such a cuddle and hug and wished her a happy birthday. How jealous was I, but I had my Meet and Greet to look forward to but having drunk so much Coke had to find the ladies room. I couldn’t meet DC with a full bladder God knows what would have happened.

We rushed back to the area where we were told to meet to find so many people there. I thought “No surely they are not all meeting and greeting” but most of them were. We were told that there would be no autographs and we weren’t allowed to use our cameras, as there was now an official photographer from the Casino. Anyway, our turn arrived and my friend Sheila, who has a really cockney accent said “ERE DON’T YA KNOW WE’VE CUM ALL THE WAY FROM LONDON TA SEE YA” . DC found this very amusing and replied “I am going to be there in three weeks and I replied “You have to come over to Row B Seat 25”. He put his arms around us for the photograph and he was so relaxed. Two minutes was all we had but they were wonderful.

We hung around outside the stage door for a while but we had an early start so we had to go to bed but Sheila needed a fag first and I decided to stay with her outside the lift, as I wasn’t ready to sleep. Who should come out of the room opposite the lift but Candice, DC’s backing singer. She stopped for a chat and I showed her Verity’s photo taken with DC at the November concert at Hammersmith.

I had a wonderful experience in New York and seeing DC so close was all I could have ever wished for. I will never forget that wonderful moment for the rest of my life.

Here are two photos taken by Angie at Bournemouth and Manchester in April 2002. Love David in that Manchester City shirt!
